Open Kitchen
The László Moholy-Nagy Design Grant - Kitchen furniture competition
The call for tender announced by manufacturer Planet-Gép Ltd. – within the framework of the Moholy-Nagy László Design Grant – was to design a suite of kitchen furniture that would occupy up to 20m2sq.m and meet the needs of 30+ design-conscious urban consumers. One requirement was to adapt the design to match the production technology of Planet – Gép Ltd., as well as to take into consideration recent design trends, which increasingly create a living room ambience in the kitchen.
In line with the manufacturer's requirements, the plan consciously interrupts the view of the closed, homogeneous frontal kitchens on the market. The furniture is divided into three separate blocks according to function: cupboard, table and cabinet. The individual elements, as well as the living room furniture, fit loosely in space, the functional openings in the furniture (packing surfaces) offset the closed geometric blocks. The characteristics of furniture used in living rooms are deliberately reflected in the proportions and forms of the individual elements. The suite of furniture is principally constructed from laminated and veneered furniture board and plywood in kale green, black, pink and natural beech colours. The uniqueness of the furniture is enhanced by the terrazzo-patterned laminate surface, which is repeated in several places.
Kitchen cupboard: a generously proportioned horizontal block designed without wall cabinets. The cupboard contains open compartments, and incorporates a built-in dishwasher, pull-out integrated waste bin, drawers, hob and a kitchen sink. At one end, vertical shelving elements form an interesting counterpoint.
Cabinet: along with a built in fridge freezer and a single oven, it consists of pull-out storage and partially open shelves for the storage of dry foods. The low height means the upper surface of the furniture also serves as a useful storage area.
Table: The T-shaped table set at the edge is braced by compartments on either side. The pull-out element on the shorter side offers an option for an extended work surface or additional seating in the kitchen.
This kitchen is based on the grant-winning programme of László Moholy-Nagy Design Grant competition.
